A Statement from Rep. Cleo Fields in Response President Trump’s Reported Cuts to LIHEAP Funding

May 5, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. “Today my office was notified that President Trump’s budget for fiscal year 2026 seeks to end funding for LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. This program provides financial assistance to individuals and families in our communities who are struggling to pay their heating and cooling bills. The recipients of this program are those most in need, and it is unthinkable that a president, or any leader, would want to see their people suffering in the cold or unable to find relief in the heat.  Louisiana summers often see temperatures in excess of one hundred degrees. Access to air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter, especially for children and the elderly, can be the difference between life and death. I am urging President Trump to reconsider his decision.”

Background

The Low Income Energy Assistance Program is a life-saving program that helps low-income households pay their energy bills. There are currently recipients of this program in every state with an estimated 103,000 household receiving assistance in Louisiana. During FY2023 heating assistance served 25,594 households and cooling assistance served 99,771 households across Louisiana .
