Congressman Fields Urges Constituents to Stay Safe During Winter Storm

January 21, 2025

Baton Rouge, LA – As severe winter weather sweeps through Louisiana, Congressman Cleo Fields is urging constituents to prioritize their safety and stay off the roadways. Road conditions are expected to worsen rapidly as up to 8-10 inches of snow accumulates across Louisiana, and ice predicted to develop later this evening. Hazardous conditions will persist for many hours after the snowfall ends. The Louisiana Department of Transportation (DOTD) has closed certain interstate sites as a precautionary measure.

“This storm presents significant risks, and I want every family to take all necessary precautions to stay safe. Please remain inside, avoid unnecessary travel, and use the resources available to stay prepared,” said Congressman Fields.

Several warming sites in District 6 are being established in the event residents experience power outages. The warming centers have cots, blankets, MREs and a place for pets. Local warming sites can be found by visiting virtual.la.gov.

To help Louisiana residents prepare and remain safe during the weather, here are some essential safety tips:

  • Prepare your home: Have your emergency kit prepared. It should include items such as water, non-perishable food items, a flashlight, batteries, blankets, toiletries, medications, etc.

  • Protect your pipes, plants, and pets: Wrap exposed pipes and bring your potted plants and pets indoors. Use frost cloths or blankets to cover your outdoor plants. Avoid plastic as it can trap moisture and damage plants at freezing temperatures.

  • Avoid house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning: Do not use generators indoors and ensure proper ventilation when using alternative heat sources.

  • Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates and alerts through local news and trusted weather apps.

For additional safety tips and winter weather preparedness resources, constituents are encouraged to visit virtual.la.gov and getagameplan.org. Constituents may also dial 5-1-1 for information about traffic and road conditions.

“Our top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of all our constituents,” Congressman Fields emphasized. “Please don’t take risks. Stay off the roads, take care of our neighbors and loved ones, and reach out for help if needed.”
