Congressman Fields on the Supreme Court Hearing Louisiana V. Callais
Washington, DC – Today, attorneys for the State of Louisiana and intervening Black voters made it clear to the highest court in the land that the drawing of Louisiana’s sixth congressional district is constitutional.
Both the Middle District and the Fifth Circuit Court ruled that Louisiana should have two majority minority districts. The current map complies with this ruling, ensuring that Louisiana’s Black residents are able to receive proper representation in Congress.
“I am confident that the court will find that politics was the predominant factor in the drawing of this map,” explains Congressman Fields.
The current map outlining Louisiana’s six congressional districts is the direct result of bipartisan compromise and litigation. This map would not have been possible without the collaboration of both parties in the state legislature, and the approval of the governor.
“Arguing this case should be left to the talented lawyers who have put in countless hours over several years. My focus is on lowering costs for Louisiana residents, making housing more affordable for middle class families, protecting consumers, and expanding access to early childhood education.”
