Congressman Fields Responds to the Announcement of President Trump’s Pause on Most Tariffs

April 10, 2025

Washington, DC – The recent decision by President Trump to pause the majority of his planned tariffs for 90 days, is proof that the voice of the people matters.

One day prior to this pause, Congressman Cleo Fields (LA-06) sent a letter to President Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick speaking on behalf of his constituents to express deep concern for the impact that tariffs would have on the state’s residents and businesses. The Port of New Orleans and the Port of SouthLouisiana serve as critical gateways for imports and exports that benefit both Louisiana’s economy and the national economy.

A portion of the letter reads as follows: “While I understand the administration's goal of protecting American industries and ensuring fair trade practices, I must respectfully highlight the impact these tariffs are having on my constituents and communities across Louisiana.”

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, Louisiana was the 4th largest state exporter of goods in 2024. Louisiana exports reached over $87 billion dollars in 2024 alone and accounted for close to one third of Louisiana’s GDP.

These exports represent jobs, businesses, and the livelihoods of hardworking people in Louisiana and throughout the country. Congressman Fields urges President Trump to keep this mind as he considers the trading relationship between the United States and nations around the world.

“I am pleased that the administration listened to the concerns of myself and so many others with this pause. As the president continues to navigate the future of American trade policy, it is my sincerest hope that he will continue to keep the potential impact on states like Louisiana front and center,” said Congressman Fields.
