CONGRESSMAN FIELDS ON ORAL ARGUMENTS IN LOUISIANA V. CALLAIS

October 15, 2025

Washington, D.C. – “As I sat and listened to today’s oral arguments in Louisiana v. Callais, I was reminded of just how much is at stake in our country’s democracy. This case marks a pivotal moment in not only Louisiana’s ongoing fight to protect fair representation, but states all across this nation as well. While I am cautiously optimistic following this morning’s hearing, we must remain vigilant and committed to defending the principles enshrined in Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Section 2 was enacted to ensure that every citizen, regardless of race, has an equal opportunity to participate in the political process and elect candidates of their choice. That protection remains just as essential today as it was in 1965.

Every Louisiana community deserves representation that reflects their voices, their values, and their rightful place in our democracy. I am hopeful that justice will prevail and that the Supreme Court will uphold the Voting Rights Act’s promise of fairness and equality for all.”
