Congressman Fields Calls for Immediate Review of Visa Revocations Affecting International Students At Southern University

April 22, 2025

Baton Rouge, LA – Congressman Cleo Fields (LA-06) has issued a formal request to Secretary of State, Marco Rubio; Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem; and Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Todd Lyons, for an immediate review and explanation regarding the recent revocation of visas for eight international students enrolled at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA.

“The sudden termination of these students’ legal status without clear justification not only threatens their academic careers but also undermines our nation’s reputation as a welcoming place for global scholarship,” said Congressman Fields. “Such decisions demand immediate review and full transparency.”

Southern University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), has a long-standing tradition of fostering academic excellence, cultural exchange, and international collaboration. Congressman Fields emphasized that international students enrich the learning environment and contribute significantly to America’s global relationships. In his formal letter, Congressman Fields called on federal authorities to:

  • Provide a transparent explanation of the visa revocations, including any alleged violations.

  • Consider reinstating the students’ visas pending a full investigation.

  • Ensure all actions taken by immigration authorities adhere to proper due process and reflect our nation’s commitment to fairness and educational opportunity.

Congressman Fields closed with an appeal for comprehensive action from federal immigration officials stating, “educational institutions deserve transparency, and our international students deserve fair treatment consistent with our American values.”
